Lamine Yamal continues to shine. The 17-year-old was the star of the show for Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona in the first leg of the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan last night which ended in a 3-3 draw.

With the team being down two goals, it was Yamal who sparked a comeback with a scintillating goal to make it 2-1.

The La Masia graduate continued to trouble the Inter defence regularly and even hit the woodwork twice in a performance that left everyone in awe.

Records tumble

Last night was a special occasion for Lamine Yamal as he made his 100th senior appearance for Barcelona – aged just 17 years(!).

The 17-year-old right winger not only delivered a standout performance on the night, but also shattered some records along the way.

Starting the game, despite late doubts due to discomfort during the warm-up, Lamine became the second-youngest player ever to appear in a Champions League semi-final.

At 17 years and 291 days old, he sits just behind Julian Draxler, who featured for Schalke against Manchester United at Old Trafford at the age of 17 years and 226 days in May 2011.

The teenage sensation also became the youngest player to score in a Champions League semi-final, surpassing Kylian Mbappe, who scored at 18 years and 140 days during AS Monaco’s elimination by Juventus in 2017.

Lamine had already found the net in this campaign’s Round of 16 (vs Benfica) and quarter-finals (vs Borussia Dortmund).

Meteoric rise

To put Lamine’s rise into perspective, he has already played 100 professional matches at just 17 years old, that too for a giant like Barcelona – a notable feat when compared to all-time greats.

After all, at the same age, Cristiano Ronaldo had only made 19 appearances, and Lionel Messi just nine.

In terms of numbers, by 17 Ronaldo had scored five goals and provided four assists. Messi, on the other hand, had one goal. Lamine, though, already boasts 22 goals and 33 assists in his nascent club career.

Sky is the limit for the youngster, who is being tipped for the Ballon d’Or.
