With 2024 wrapped and the new year rung in, it’s as good a time as any to look at which Premier League and EFL clubs managed to win the most points per game in the calendar year.

You could guess who is in the top three, but some of the teams that missed out are as interesting as the ones that made the cut for the top ten.

Manchester United and Spurs, for instance, are languishing at joint-45th in the table, which was put together by Ben Mayhew on his Substack, Experimental 361. The two sides ended a disappointing 2024 with just 1.38 points per game (51 overall), arguably casting Tottenham’s year in an even worse light than initially thought.

Aston Villa are not that far ahead of them, sitting in 31st place having earned 1.49 PPG (55 overall), despite finishing fourth in the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League. Newcastle United, meanwhile, are 14th with 1.66 PPG (63 overall), even though their performances were very inconsistent across the year.

A special shoutout to Birmingham City, who finished just outside the top ten at 11th with 1.69 PPG (71 overall). That’s very impressive given they were relegated from the Championship at the end of last season.

10. Stockport County – 1.77 (78 points)

The Hatters enjoyed a fantastic campaign in 2023/24, earning promotion from League Two by winning the division with 92 points. Their fabulous form has continued into this season as they ended the year fifth in the third tier with 37 points. Not bad for a club that was playing non-league football just over two years ago.

9. Walsall – 1.84 (81 points)

The Saddlers didn’t enjoy a particularly great first half to the year – they lost six of their final 11 matches last season – but they are flying it in League Two this term. They closed out 2024 with a six-game winning run and sit 12 points clear at the top of the standings.

8. Doncaster Rovers – 1.84 (83 points)

A strong 2023/24 ended in play-off failure for Doncaster Rovers, but they are back in the hunt for promotion to League One this season having gained 37 points in their opening 23 games.

7. Chelsea – 1.89 (70 points)

After a turbulent few years mired in uncertainty and poor results, Chelsea began their resurgence in 2024. Mauricio Pochettino ended his one season in charge strongly before Enzo Maresca picked up the baton to potentially return the club to the Champions League. The Blues have lost just seven of their 37 Premier League matches last year, winning 20 and drawing ten.

6. Wycombe Wanderers – 1.93 (87 points)

An unremarkable 2023/24 campaign was seen out in impressive fashion as Wycombe lost just two of their final 13 matches. They’ve ridden that momentum into this season, sitting second in the table at the end of the year.

5. Wrexham – 2.00 (90 points)

Right there with them is the club backed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Wrexham lost just nine games in 2024 and are contending for a third successive promotion to take them to the second tier – and one step away from the Premier League.

4. Leeds United – 2.13 (96 points)

Only Leeds United could pick up nearly a century of points and not earn promotion. The top end of the Championship was stacked last season and they were the unlucky ones to miss out, losing to Southampton in the play-off final. They 29 of their 45 league matches, drawing nine and losing just seven.

3. Man City – 2.16 (82 points)

An absolutely insane run of form saw Manchester City go from December 2023 to May 2024 unbeaten to clinch a fourth consecutive Premier League title. But they’ve fallen down to third thanks to their rotten results of late. Remarkably, all six of their top-flight defeats last year came in November and December.

2. Liverpool – 2.30 PPG (85 points)

Transition? What transition? The changeover between Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot has been so seamless that Liverpool are in a terrific position to win the Premier League title. They lost just four league games in 2024 and scored more goals (92) than anyone else across the four tiers.

1. Arsenal – 2.36 PPG (85 points)

Unfortunately for Arsenal fans there is no trophy for finishing top of this particular table. To lose just three games all year and not take home the big prize – and to not be leading the charge for it in 2024/25 – is incredible. It might be the right time to focus on other silverware.
