Lamine Yamal has become the player with the highest value in world football after signing his new deal at Barcelona, according to new research.

Swiss research group CIES Football Observatory have calculated it would take at least a 400 million euros fee to prize the 17-year-old from the Catalan giants, almost double the cost of Neymar’s world record transfer to PSG, which cost 222 million euros in 2017.

Yamal has had a meteoric rise to the top. After making his debut in La Liga at 15 years and nine months, the fifth-youngest to do so, he has since gone on to star for Spain in the EURO 2024 winning campaign, being awarded goal and young player of the tournament.

He has also lifted two La Liga titles, a Copa Del Rey, and was the winner of last year’s Golden Boy award.

The six-year deal he signed with the Catalan club last week includes a one billion euros buy-out clause, which has led to an increase in his valuation.

The study’s report said: “This extraordinary figure is linked to equally extraordinary performances achieved at an age – 18 in July – when most players, even the best, are just starting out at professional level.”

The statistical technique used by its researchers to build the model is called multiple linear regression (MLR), with fees paid by clubs as an independent variable. The sample comprises over 8000 transactions of players transferred for money from clubs worldwide during the period stretching from July 2014 to March 2024.

Erling Haaland is the most valuable Premier League footballer, being valued at 239.6 million euros, with Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham rounding off the podium with a valuation of 233.8 million euros.

Bellingham’s teammate at Madrid Kylian Mbappe is fourth on the list at 192.5 million euros, with Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala rounding off the top five at 154.8 million euros. The English Premier League is by far the most represented in the top 100 with 42 players, followed by La Liga at 19. Champions League winners Paris St-Germain are the most represented club with 11 players.

Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen is the most valuable goalkeeper at 64.3 million euros, while Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsi is the centre back with the highest value at 118 million euros.
