Manchester United must raise funds in January if they wish to sign new players, but selling Marcus Rashford might prove to be a daunting task.
Sky Sports correspondent Melissa Reddy highlighted the biggest issues haunting the club ahead of the winter transfer window.
As the journalist notes, Ruben Amorim finds himself with a squad incompatible with tactical philosophy, with the club’s current form and league table speaking volumes. The Red Devils lost their last three contests in the Premier League and the last four across all competitions, and currently lie in a miserable 14th place in the standings.
Therefore, Reddy was asked if the January transfer market could offer Amorim some solutions, but her answer was rather grim.
“Unfortunately not”, said the Man United insider, reiterating that the club doesn’t have any available funds for the market at this stage, and the only way to raise cash would be selling some of their players.
Naturally, the thorny Rashford topic came up, with the interviewer suggesting that the England international’s exit would give the club some breathing room on the market.
Reddy agreed with the notion, adding that the 27-year-old would represent a pure profit on the balance sheet due to his status as a Manchester United academy product. However, the journalist fears that offloading the striker is easier said than done, as he currently has “no market”.
As she explains, Rashford’s form, attitude and his reported off-the-pitch incidents have repelled the big European teams. Therefore, it will be hard for the Red Devils to find a top club that is interested in the player’s services and what the financial means to offer him the sort of lucrative deal he currently enjoys at Old Trafford.
Rashford was reportedly offered to Juventus in recent days, but the Serie A giants are more inclined towards signing his teammate Joshua Zirkzee.
