The NWSL season might be over, but some NJ/NY Gotham FC players are away on international duty. As such, their year is not over. This includes six players for the USWNT: Tierna Davidson, Rose Lavelle, Jenna Nighswonger, Yazmeen Ryan, Emily Sonnett, and Lynn Williams. The ladies will have two more opportunities to impress the head coach, Emma Hayes, before 2025.
Moreover, the Gotham FC players and the rest of the USWNT will face two talented teams. The Stars and Stripes will first play England on Saturday before playing against the Netherlands on Tuesday. Both fixtures are on their opponents' home soil.
Undoubtedly, the USWNT will want to end the year on a high. Of course, they want to win, for winning is always the goal. In addition, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher announced her retirement from the USWNT. Therefore, the next two matches will be her last. Her teammates will fight to get the wins for her.
Meanwhile, the national team also wants to take revenge on England. Two years ago, England won 2-1 at Wembley Stadium. Ultimately, this game put it out there that the USWNT was beatable. In some ways, this marked a strenuous period for the side. The US did not play their best and was knocked out of the 2023 World Cup in the Round of 16.
Since Hayes took over in June, things have been better. Of course, she led the USWNT to the gold medal in the Olympics. The team is different and it feels like they can beat England this time. The Gotham FC ladies should make an impact in the game too, regardless of whether they start or come off the bench.
Supporters should expect at least two of the Bats to start, possibly Davidson and Lavelle. Davidson has become a popular choice at center-back for Hayes when she is healthy and has worked well with Naomi Girma. She has also shown off her goal-scoring ability. Then, Lavelle is one of the best players on the team. It would be interesting if she did not start, for her ability to control the ball and act as an attacking option is vital against the second-best national team in the world.
Additionally, Williams could be a spark off the bench if she does not start. She has proven herself and her ability to contribute to attacking sequences and open up chances for herself and others.
Any of the Gotham FC players could make a difference in Saturday's match. It will be interesting to see whether they will help lead the USWNT to a win.
