The Costly Effects of No Champions League Football

Dortmund’s 1-0 home loss to 11th-place Augsburg is detrimental to the chances of playing in a European competition next season. The Champions League is now realistically out of reach, while Europa or Conference League qualification will be a formidable task. The inability to qualify for any European competition will lead to significant losses in potential revenue for Borussia Dortmund.

Die Schwarz Gelben earned a record gross income of €639 million in the 2023/24 season, according to the club’s financial reports. This gross income resulted in a net profit of €44.3 million, a 361% increase of the 22/23 season earnings and the second largest profit in club history. An incredible year on the pitch and in the accountant’s ledger should have provided a great starting point for the 2024/25 season, but performances have been subpar by Dortmund’s standards.

The poor results on the field this season will lead to many financial problems for Borussia Dortmund, as so much of the income received is tied to their performance and presence in European football. In the 2024 season alone, TV marketing revenue accrued by the Champions League campaign totaled at €120 million. This amount totals almost ¼ of the non-transfer related income generated by Die Borussen, which can almost single-handedly be given onus as to why the club returned such impressive profits. At the same time, Bundesliga and DFB Pokal TV revenue totaled €85.9 million in the same season.
