The Laureus Award Gala was held in Madrid last night and it brought some much-needed happiness to Real Madrid fans amidst the team’s low as they were named the best team in the world for the last year.

Needless to say, several high-profile sportsmen were in the city for the event including recently retired tennis maestro Rafael Nadal.

Also in attendance for the event was Novak Djokovic, widely acclaimed as one of the best tennis players to have ever graced the game. The Serbian star made time from his schedule to pay a visit to the Santiago Bernabeu and was taken aback by the stadium.

The best in the world

When Djokovic entered the field at the Bernabeu, he did not hesitate in admitting that it is one of the best venues he had ever been to.

“It’s the best stadium in the world,” he said, iterating that he had not seen a more majestic construction.

After all, there are not too many stadiums in the sport that can compete with Real Madrid’s home ground in terms of being a state-of-the-art facility. The recent renovations have only gone on to make it more iconic.

Florentino Perez and Co. spent a fortune on the renovation of the stadium and brought in world-class features including a 360-degree LED scoreboard screen, a sleek steel facade and special VIP hospitality suites.

Moreover, the stadium now has a retractable roof that can be closed before games and an underground greenhouse hypogeum that stores the grass pitch which comes out only on match days.
