Murphy has been handed a start ahead of this evening's clash at St. James' Park, replacing Joe Willock, as Newcastle target a first victory against the Reds since December 2015.
Nick Pope, who was sent off in a 2-0 home defeat against Liverpool during the 2022/23 campaign, starts in-between the sticks while Dan Burn, set for his 100th Premier League outing for his boyhood club this evening, starts alongside Fabian Schär at the heart of United's backline.
Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall both occupy the respective defensive flanks.
Bruno Guimarães, another to reach a century of English top-flight appearances for the Magpies, starts in the middle of the park alongside Sandro Tonali and Joelinton while Anthony Gordon, on target against the Reds in last season's 2-1 defeat at St. James' Park, and Murphy will aim to provide attacking support for Alexander Isak, who scored on his Magpies debut against Liverpool during the 2022/23 season.
Howe has a number of attacking options to deploy from the bench if needed, including Callum Wilson, Will Osula, Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almirón.
Sean Longstaff, who made his Premier League bow against tonight's opponents during the 2018/19 campaign, is also named on the bench as well as Willock, Lloyd Kelly and Matt Targett.
Martin Dúbravka is the substitute goalkeeper.
