Liverpool remain firmly fixated on Alexander Isak as their leading transfer target, even as the clock ticks down on the summer window. Since June, Arne Slot has prioritised the Sweden international as the forward to spearhead his attack.
Hugo Ekitike has already arrived at Anfield after Liverpool’s opening bid for Isak was rejected, yet the financial flexibility created through player sales means the Reds still have scope to return for Newcastle’s prized striker. Despite Ekitike’s encouraging displays, Isak represents a level of proven quality and experience that would elevate Liverpool’s attacking options.
The reality is that talks have slowed, leaving uncertainty as to whether Slot will get his preferred striker.

Isak’s stance has become clear, with the forward refusing to play for Newcastle again, signalling his desire to move on from St James’ Park. While Newcastle have secured Champions League football, the Swede’s ambitions lie in winning it, something Liverpool are better positioned to challenge for.
His national coach, Jon Dahl Tomasson, has offered strong support for his player during this period. Speaking to Fotbollskanalen, the Sweden manager said:
“First of all: Alex is an extremely professional player. A fantastic character and personality. I have spoken to Alex a lot during this period.
“Situations like this are quite complex. These are extremely complex environments that the players operate in. I’m sure it will work out in the end, but you have to know the whole picture before you draw conclusions. That’s always a good tip.
“I don’t think we know the whole story. I don’t know the whole picture either. It’s quite normal because there’s a lot of politics in a football club.
“But one thing is for sure: Alex is a great guy and very professional. We should all be very careful about drawing conclusions because we don’t know the bigger picture.
“There is time, he is a professional, and I know he has been training.
“Of course, he hasn’t trained with a team and hasn’t played any matches. Let’s wait and see. We will have a good chat, Alex and I, and hopefully, he will be back in team training soon.”
Tomasson’s backing highlights the professionalism and resilience of a striker caught in a delicate standoff.

Liverpool’s challenge remains navigating Newcastle’s firm position. With three years still left on Isak’s contract, the Magpies are under no pressure to sell. The absence of a replacement further strengthens their stance.
A figure close to £150 million would be required to test Eddie Howe’s resolve. Liverpool’s first bid, reported at £110 million, underlines their intent but also the gulf to Newcastle’s valuation. Whether Richard Hughes and his recruitment team are willing to stretch beyond their current limits remains uncertain.
Liverpool’s attack requires reinforcement. Federico Chiesa’s strike against Bournemouth offered a reminder of his value, yet the sale of Ben Doak has left the squad lighter up front. Competing across all fronts demands depth and proven quality, and that is why Isak has remained Slot’s top target.
The decision is stark. Liverpool must either commit financially to bring Alexander Isak to Anfield or pivot quickly to another option. With the season already in motion, time is no longer on their side.
