Sunderland defender Megan Beer will retire from playing professional football at the end of the season.

The Lady Black Cats confirmed the news via a post on their official club website just a short time ago.

The 32-year-old joined Sunderland after spending her youth in the Newcastle United Centre of Excellence. She has gone on to enjoy an 11-year career on Wearside, winning the 2014 FAWSL2 title with Sunderland and briefly representing the club in the top flight.

Following the club’s demotion to the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division in 2018, Beer became an integral member of the team. She helped the club to regain their elite game status in 2021 and has since been a regular member of the Sunderland squad in the Barclays Women’s Championship.

With the end of the season in sight, Beer has determined that it is the right time to hang up her boots.

After her retirement was confirmed, Beer said “It’s never going to be a happy feeling being here for so long and working with Mel [Reay] for so long, but I’m feeling ready for it. It’s really nice to have seen all of the changes in the women’s game over the years.

“To the fans, thank you for all the support continued through tough and good times, it doesn’t go unnoticed. To the staff and players, thank you, I’ll not forget you, and I love you all.”

Beer could make her final Sunderland appearance against Sheffield United at The Stadium of Light on Sunday.
