Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has provided a fitness update on both Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has revealed that winger Romaine Mundle could feature against Hull City this weekend, but Tommy Watson is still not ready to return yet from his own injury problems.
Mundle has not made an appearance for the Black Cats since a 2-2 draw with Coventry City back in November, courtesy of a hamstring injury, although he was an unused substitute during their 2-1 defeat to fellow promotion chasers Leeds United last Monday.
Meanwhile, Watson's last Championship outing came in December, when he was withdrawn through injury in the 26th minute of a 1-1 draw with Bristol City.
The 18-year-old, who was enjoying a breakout season at the Stadium of Light, is still yet to feature in a matchday squad since that clash with the Robins.
The good news is that Mundle could start in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off against Hull, but Watson is also making progress from his own hamstring troubles, albeit it is too soon for him to play against the Tigers.
The Black Cats boss told the Sunderland Echo: "Romaine (Mundle) should be OK now.
"We felt against Leeds it was just a little bit too soon.
"It's not just about the minutes, it's about a strong opponent in and out of possession. We didn't think at this moment he was ready for that.
"But he has had one more week working with us, so now I think it should be OK. I think he is ready now.
"We didn't rush the process at Leeds, especially because of the intensity of that game.
"We felt it was just a little bit too early for him, but for now, I think it will be OK. It is the same with Browney (Alan Browne), I think he is ready now to get some minutes.
"Tommy (Watson) will be back in full training next week."
Squad depth has been somewhat of an issue at times for Sunderland due to their extensive injury list over the course of the season, but there is now a strong selection for Le Bris to choose from.
"I hope we will have more options now," Sunderland's head coach added.
"I think our bench is the strongest it has been. It is good to refresh the team because the other players have played a lot of minutes, they need help and energy.
"So if we manage a little bit (of) depth in the squad, this will be better for us for sure."
Le Bris' comments regarding winger Mundle and midfielder Browne indicate that the duo will be available for the Black Cats' clash with Hull City on Saturday.
Following their defeat to promotion rivals Leeds, it is vital that the North East outfit can bounce back with a win over the Tigers, in order to maintain their confidence at the business end of the season.
During the early exchanges of the campaign, Mundle was one of the Black Cats' best assets, as he has notched four goals and two assists in 15 appearances this season.
Supporters will be pleased to hear that the 21-year-old could be in action as soon as the upcoming weekend, as his influence could help Le Bris and co get back to winning ways at the first time of asking.
Black Cats with an important boost.
