Federico Chiesa Eyes Real Betis Switch to Revive Career

When Federico Chiesa arrived at Anfield as the sole signing in Arne Slot’s debut season, expectations were high. The Italian winger, a Serie A star at Juventus and key to Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, brought pedigree and flair. But his Premier League chapter has struggled to even begin.

Fitness issues and a string of injuries marred his early season progress. By the time he was match fit, Liverpool’s right flank was already locked down by the ever-reliable Mohamed Salah. As a result, Chiesa featured just 12 times in all competitions, with only four appearances in the Premier League and not a single league start under Slot.

While the club soared to the Premier League title, Chiesa remained on the periphery, and speculation has steadily mounted over his future on Merseyside.

Real Betis Enter the Frame

Now, Spanish newspaper El Correo reports that Chiesa is looking to reignite his career in La Liga with Real Betis. The Seville-based club are said to have identified Chiesa as a Plan B option to replace Manchester United’s Antony, who enjoyed a successful loan spell under Manuel Pellegrini.

“Chiesa’s entourage does like the ecosystem that Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis is forming so that players of this level show significant performance on the field,” the report notes.

This quote, shared by El Correo, highlights the allure of Betis’ current project. Under Pellegrini, players previously out of favour elsewhere have thrived, and Chiesa’s team appears convinced the same could be possible for the 27-year-old.

Loan Move on the Cards

At this stage, a permanent transfer may prove too complex, especially given Liverpool’s reported asking price and Chiesa’s limited contributions. Instead, a loan with an option to buy is thought to be under consideration. El Correo states:

“Should both clubs try to reach an agreement to see the Genoa player wear the green and white jersey, the option to consider would be a loan with an option to buy, although the obligation to do so has not been specified at this time.”

While AC Milan and Napoli have previously been linked, Betis now appear to be the most concrete option, with initial contact reportedly made with Chiesa’s representatives.

Time Running Out at Anfield?

With Salah still performing at elite levels and younger options like Ben Doak pushing for minutes, Chiesa’s chances of breaking into Slot’s plans appear remote. His exit, whether temporary or permanent, would allow Liverpool to reshape their attacking depth and perhaps free up wages for summer reinforcements.

Given how quickly Arne Slot has moulded his side into champions, there’s little room for passengers or projects. Chiesa, talented though he is, needs rhythm and consistency — and a switch to Spain may be his best route back to form.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

For Liverpool fans, the Chiesa saga is as frustrating as it is understandable. This is a player who once tormented top defences in Europe and looked tailor-made for a dynamic wide role. But football is ruthless, and his timing could not have been worse.

Slot’s team clicked immediately. There was no bedding-in period for the manager, and with Salah still in full stride, the door slammed shut for Chiesa almost before it opened. Some supporters may feel he wasn’t given a fair chance, but in a season chasing silverware, loyalty to in-form players is inevitable.

Real Betis seems an ideal destination. Under Pellegrini, there’s a calm, attacking system that rewards technical ability and intelligent movement. If Antony thrived there, it’s not hard to imagine Chiesa doing the same. A loan deal with an option to buy feels smart for all parties — Liverpool reduce risk, Betis gain a motivated player, and Chiesa gets the platform he so clearly craves.

Whether he returns to Anfield in future with a point to prove or moves on permanently, his departure would be met with disappointment more than bitterness. He came with hope, but it just wasn’t the right time.
