French outfit Stade Rennais are reportedly set to ask for a club-record fee for promising star Desire Doue, who is on Manchester United’s radar.

United are believed to be keen on bolstering their midfield options, and this need could be made even more urgent in the event that Casemiro and Christian Eriksen leave the club.

Casemiro continues to be strongly linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabia while Eriksen is thought to be of interest to Ajax and Turkish giants Galatasaray.

In keeping up with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ mantra of building his new-look United around a core of young players with the potential to become world-class, United were recently mentioned to be keen on signing 18-year-old Doue.

The teenager has made 31 Ligue 1 appearances for Rennes this season and in that time, has managed an impressive four goals and five assists.

In addition to his incredible abilities, another factor that makes Doue attractive to United is his versatility. As well as playing in a deeper midfield position, he can also be deployed in the number 10 role and also in wide areas of the pitch.

According to L’Équipe, Rennes are expecting a “historical sale” for Doue, who “undoubtedly” played his last game for the club in their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Reims over the weekend.

Rennes want a club-record fee for their player, who retains the admiration of several elite European clubs.

Alongside United, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all keen on landing the player.

Last summer, Rennes sold Jeremy Doku to Manchester City for €66m. Rennes will therefore ask for a sum north of this figure for Doue. €70m has been touted as a price that could potentially get a deal over the line.

It’s understood that United could find it difficult to add the Angers-born footballer to their ranks because of the ongoing restructuring currently going on at Old Trafford.

However, Rennes are fully aware that there will be no shortage of interest in Doue and are hopeful that a bidding war is sparked so that the price goes up.
