SSC Napoli are ready to move on to PSV Eindhoven’s Jerdy Schouten should they fail to agree a deal for Manchester United’s Scott McTominay.

The departure of the Scottish midfielder has been one of the most reported on issues surrounding the club as the end to the window draws closer.

Fulham were originally thought to be a likely destination and had a couple of offers rejected for the player, but they switched focus to previous United target Sander Berge.

With the Cottagers moving aside, Napoli have emerged as the most likely destination for McTominay and the news broke late last night that they have had a €25 million bid rejected by United as they aim to receive at least €30 million for the Scotland international.

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport report this morning that while McTominay is still “the first objective” for the Naples based club, they do have other alternatives.

It is reported that Napoli have two problems in their pursuit of the 27 year old and the first is United are refusing to budge on their price of €30 million.

The second is that as the player’s current contract expires next summer, the option of a loan is also currently off the table.

The paper mentions that Napoli have offered €25 million and claim, “if that were not enough, they would divert to Jerdy Schouten, already seen in Italy at Bologna and now a beacon of midfield at PSV Eindhoven.”

Helpfully for Gli Azzurri, “the player would appreciate a return to Serie A and negotiations with the Dutch champions would be a little easier than those with United.”

Interestingly, the paper does not state whether the €25 million bid has been accepted or rejected but it has been reported by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano that it has in fact been turned down.

Therefore, Napoli have a big decision to make whether they really will move on to other targets or will they continue to negotiate with United as the window enters its final days.

What’s more, it is also possible that the Serie A side could be using interest in Schouten as a way to put pressure on McTominay to force a move or to scare United into lowering their demands.
