Sparta Rotterdam present Toornstra as veteran continues in the Eredivisie | OneFootball

Jens Toornstra continues his career at Sparta Rotterdam. The 36-year-old midfielder has signed a two-season contract at Het Kasteel.

Toornstra had several options after his free departure from Utrecht. NAC Breda were also after him, but he chose Sparta.

“Jens brings not only footballing ability, but also personality and leadership”, says technical director Gerard Nijkamp. “He has performed at the highest level and knows what is required to lift a team to a higher level.”

Nijkamp is pleased with the experience of the four-time Oranje international. “We have a young, ambitious selection and someone like Jens can be of great value in that, both in the dressing room and on the field. His mentality fits Sparta perfectly: hard work, taking responsibility and never giving up. We are therefore very pleased that he has chosen us, despite interest from other clubs.”

Toornstra has now played more than 400 matches in the Eredivisie. He started his career at ADO Den Haag, after which he made his definitive breakthrough at FC Utrecht. In 2014, he earned a transfer to Feyenoord, with which he won the national title, among other things.

The midfielder returned to FC Utrecht in 2022. He lost his starting place there last season. Nevertheless, he still played 33 official matches, in which he scored once and registered four assists.
