The national team coach Luciano Spalletti believes that Francesco Camarda is the ‘future’ of Italian football, though he doesn’t know if he will still be in charge when he makes the first team.

Camarda has so far played 100 minutes for Milan’s first team, across Serie A and the Champions League, in what are the first steps towards gradually integrating him fully into Paulo Fonseca’s side.

There has been a lot written and said about the boyhood Milanista given his ridiculous scoring at youth level and his rapid rise to where he is now. The good news is that the striker extended his deal until 2027 earlier in the year, amid reports of interest from abroad.

Against Club Brugge in the UCL Camarda was the youngest Italian (and Milan) debutant in the history of the competition and he even had a goal disallowed. He started the 3-3 draw against Cagliari before the last international break, a real gesture of trust from Fonseca.

Spalletti spoke to Sky during the Gran Galà del Calcio AIC 2024 which was held yesterday evening. The former Napoli coach also spoke about Camarda and his comments have been relayed by MilanPress.

“I don’t know if I’ll be here long enough to coach him, whoever comes after me will be lucky (laughs). It’s even better to keep an eye on a guy like that, because we all know he’s very good and will be our future,” he said (via MilanPress).

“But sometimes getting ahead of himself can put him in difficulty or create embarrassment. Camarda has quality in abundance. Inside the national team, we talk about young players every day. I’ve heard wonderful things about him from those who coach him every day.

“Besides being a good young man, let’s let him grow. He’ll have a very big future. I went to see a Milan match a short while ago and when he went to warm up all the fans stood up. I would have liked to create a bit of a ‘bark’ in him. These are guys where you don’t know how they’ll be in those situations.”
