Bournemouth's Premier League turnaround completing manager Gary O'Neil is a viable alternative for Simon Rusk's full-time role at Southampton.

For years, clubs have jumped from one coach to another whenever relegation alarms have prompted them to. Simultaneously, those include early sackings as well which obviously aren't simple to justify when the coach in question ticked the promotion check-list merely months ago.

Sounds kind of a Southampton-esque issue, isn't it? Well, the fact that their Southern neighbours Bournemouth met these crossroads before perfectly suits their fierce rivalry.

O'Neil can replicate his Bournemouth success at Southampton

So, Bournemouth were also carried away in ecstasy of their upgraded Premier League level around three years back. But it didn't take them too long to realise that the promotion honour doesn't guarantee anyone the Premier League capabilities from the get-go.

Understandably, their initial joyous period quickly vanished away and Bournemouth were also left with no other choice than making some harsh decisions. The Cherries moved on from their then-manager and placed their full trust in their number two understudy Gary O'Neil.

Following the departure of a fan-favourite coach so swiftly, Bournemouth wouldn't have ruled out removing O'Neil also if their worsening situation didn't improve.

To their disbelief, the unexpected good happened and O'Neil kept Bournemouth at arm's length from the relegation zone when the season slammed shut.

Speaking about the latter, he isn't guiding any team at the moment and Odds Checker also acknowledge him as a good nominee for Southampton's vacant permanent job.

Well, O'Neil might not come as the most bling-bling name in Southampton's manager search but he definitely deserves an encouraging glance. Consequently, the Saints shouldn't turn him down only on the basis of his previous ties with their derby opponents.
