Chelsea got a win over West Ham last night after going behind, but before the game all the attention was on the goalkeeper situation.

After a series of increasingly high profile errors, Robert Sanchez was in the spotlight, and when the teamsheets came out, they showed that he had finally been dropped.

Filip Jorgensen came in and did ok – although even he make a mistake with a pass into midfield, and was generally quite lucky that West Ham offered so little in attack.

Most Chelsea fans are keen to see him stay on, not just for this weekend’s game in the FA Cup, but for the league games after that too.  Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail is convinced that Jorgensen is now the hot hand and will continue to play unless he starts to make mistakes too:

“The truth is, Sanchez is not elite enough to take Chelsea to the next level, and it appears we will now get to see whether Jorgensen is up to scratch, now that it is his turn,” Gill wrote.

But manager Enzo Maresca wanted to leave his options open, claiming that Sanchez was just rested:

“In this moment, Robert [Sanchez] needs rest and Filip [Jorgensen] was very good.”

So he certainly isn’t ruling out Sanchez returning for our next league after a small break. That’s not a decision that would be popular with fans. Let’s hope he’s just saying it to be kind.

Chelsea deny they’ll go into the market for new keeper

As much as fans are convinced that Sanchez isn’t the right keeper, there are also doubts about Jorgensen being top level too. Gill’s piece claims that club sources have denied that Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is an option for next summer if Jorgensen doesn’t pass his audition:

“Club insiders have not stood up that apparent interest. But this is a position to watch for the next summer.”
