Sørensen hoping that Everton can begin to convert chances

Everton manager Brian Sørensen says that he is hoping that his side can begin to convert more of their chances.

The Blue Girls have managed to score just one goal in their first four league matches, that being an own goal against West Ham United last weekend.

Everton are winless and bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League table, however, they are unbeaten in three matches in all competitions. Sørensen is relatively pleased with his side’s form but he has highlighted the importance of converting their chances.

“That’s where we want to be; defensively strong and creating chances,” Sørensen said when discussing his side’s recent form in an Everton press conference. “It is still about converting the chances where we have to be better.

“I felt that we were a bit hard done by with some of the decisions last weekend. There were a couple of offsides that weren’t and you’re one-on-one with the keeper which is a big chance. We had more than 10 good opportunities in terms of being in a situation where we could score.

“It’s going in the right direction but as a team, we know we have to be better at converting our chances. We are working on it and hopefully, we can show this weekend that the hard work is paying off.”

Going on to discuss his side’s finishing further, Sørensen said that it’s a positive that Everton are getting into scoring positions but their execution is in need of improvement.

He said “It’s about luck but also being clinical, sharp, having confidence; there are a lot of factors around that. We are getting into the right positions and sometimes, that’s the hardest part. Now, we have to be better at executing.”

Everton travel to The King Power Stadium this weekend to face a Leicester City side in equally as poor goalscoring form. Sørensen believes that The Foxes will be really hard to break down.

He said “What we’ve seen from them is that they’re very well organised, they don’t give away much space. I don’t think they’re worried about not being on the ball so much, it’s about being defensively well-organised which they are.

“We have to break them down, be patient and find our moments. It is tough to play against these teams because we will probably have more of the ball and that’s what we want, but on the other side, it can be harder to control it because it can become a transitional game if we are not at our best.

“It’ll be a tough game. I sometimes prefer to play the top teams because it’s easier to find out where we can hurt them and if we are disciplined and defensively strong, we can do something. Teams like West Ham, Leicester, those around us, it’s more of a balancing act in terms of which way it’s flipping. The first goal will be super-important but it’s tough because they have good players and are super-organised.”

Everton’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Leicester City kicks-off at 3pm on Sunday afternoon.
