Marcus Rashford remains hopeful he can seal his desired move to Barcelona in the coming weeks, but he does face one obstacle in the potential deal.

The Manchester United star has yet to agree an exit from Old Trafford amidst his ongoing exile by Ruben Amorim at Carrington.

Now, with just over four weeks to go until the new campaign gets underway, fans are beginning to ponder what could come of Rashford’s situation if he is not sold by the opening day.

Barcelona, after failing in their pursuits of Luis Diaz and Nico Williams, have placed the 27-year-old high on their forward shortlist, with talks having already taken place throughout the summer and subsequently intensified when they were made aware they wouldn’t be signing their first-choice targets.

Reports have suggested Rashford is now the La Liga champions’ ‘priority’ at this stage of the window. However, one issue that’s certain to make negotiations more difficult is that they are aiming to take him initially on board on a loan basis with the option/obligation of buying him this time next year.

Such an arrangement poses little value to United, who are desperately trying to raise funds to strengthen Amorim’s squad following a calamitous term.

The Red Devils value their academy graduate – whom Unai Emery hailed as ‘fantastic’ during his Aston Villa loan – at £40 million, which would generate straight profit and provide a substantial PSR boost.

That being said, none of his suitors have shown any indication they plan to fork out the full fee upfront, meaning INEOS chiefs may be forced to reconsider their stance.

“Barcelona are still targeting Marcus Rashford, as revealed. However, Barcelona are currently only considering a loan,” said Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

“Understand that Rashford is very open to joining Barca and has already given an initial green light for the move. It now depends on Barca. There is no agreement with Man United yet.”
