Leeds United Women recorded their first win of the FA WNL campaign with a 2-0 success away at Chester-le-Street, with goals coming either side of the interval.
Alice Hughes opened the scoring after she hooked Shauna Legge’s flick-on into the back of the net, and Kath Smith doubled the lead by dispatching an 86th minute penalty.
New signings Monique Watson and Emily Cassidy featured, and Simon Wood was pleased with the performance and securing the three points.
“I’m really proud,” Wood explained. “In the first half we did some really good stuff and you can see the progression from Wednesday against Halifax.
“They’re a good side, they won a lot of games last season when they won the league. We saw a reaction from them in the second half and we had to work out how we were going to react and we did that with a 2-0 win.
“It’s pleasing to get another win, it’s pleasing to get the clean sheet that comes with it because we have to work hard to meet our ambitions.”
On Watson making her debut: “I thought Monique got on really well, she’s such a quality player, she’s played at the level above and what’s nice is that she started at Leeds.
“To have her in a Leeds United shirt is really pleasing, and the supporters have got a really exciting player to look forward to seeing.”
“More hard work,” Wood the answered on what he was looking for in next week’s game against Cheadle. “They’re the frontrunners for this league this season.
“We’re just focusing on ourselves by putting in what we feel we need to win football matches and hopefully the performance will come from the hard work.”
