Sheffield Wednesday transfer latest: Scott Hogan, Lee Gregory and James Beadle

Highlights

  1. Sheffield Wednesday sit in the relegation zone and are the lowest-scoring team in the league, making relegation likely without changes.
  2. Manager Danny Rohl plans to make moves in the January transfer window to address their goal-scoring issues and offload underperforming players.
  3. The club is reportedly interested in signing Scott Hogan from Birmingham City and James Beadle from Oxford United to add goals and improve their defense.

Despite promotion to the Championship last season, Sheffield Wednesday have struggled to cement themselves in the division this season.

The Owls sit in the relegation zone before the New Year, and are the lowest-scoring team in the entire league. Unless something changes, they seem doomed for relegation back to League One.

To combat this freefall, manager Danny Rohl is likely to dip into the transfer market in the January transfer window.

The German manager will need to bring in a goalscorer to help alleviate their issues, while also shipping out players who have not performed this season.

Scott Hogan is linked with January move to Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls have been linked with Birmingham City striker Scott Hogan for a January transfer, as they search for more goals from their strike force in the second half of the season.

Hogan has been a prolific scorer in the EFL throughout his career, with his performances at Rochdale and Brentford earning him a £12 million move to Aston Villa in 2017.

He has since moved to Birmingham City, but Hogan has struggled to make his mark on the side under manager Wayne Rooney.

Rooney has denied Hogan being dropped from the team is an indication that he is leaving the club in January, but with his contract expiring in the summer, it seems the perfect time for the Irish international to leave the club.

According to Alan Nixon, Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Scott Hogan in January, with the 31-year-old courted to help add some more goals to the lowest scorers in the division in the New Year.

Brighton's on-loan keeper is a Sheffield Wednesday target

While scoring is a big issue at Hillsborough, the amount of goals they are conceding is not conducive to staying in the league. Wednesday are among the bottom teams for goals conceded this season, and could be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper in January.

Along with Birmingham City, the Owls have been linked with Oxford United keeper James Beadle. Beadle is on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, and his ability playing the ball out from the back is thought to be exactly what Rohl wants from his goalkeeper.

A more progressive goalkeeper than Cameron Dawson and Devis Vasquez could help the team in attack and encourage the strikers to find the net more often, as well as shore up a poor defence.

With Beadle ever present for Oxford this season, they will be reluctant to let the keeper go. However, if Brighton want to cash in on the young star or loan him to a higher division, then there is little they will be able to do to dissuade them.

Lee Gregory has been targeted by League One clubs

With Hogan linked with the club, Sheffield Wednesday forward Lee Gregory is rumoured to be a player that could make way for the striker in the January transfer window.

Darren Witcoop has reported that the 35-year-old striker is "up for grabs" in January, with a number of League One clubs interested in his services.

He also reported that other unnamed Wednesday players were transfer targets, although did not name the clubs interested.

This would end Gregory's two-and-a-half year stay with the Owls, where has scored 27 times in 86 league matches, although he has struggled for game time this season, playing just one minute in the league since October.
