Rohl looks all but set to depart Hillsborough this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday have denied that manager Dannny Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri have agreed on the German's future following further indications from him that a return to his homeland is on his mind.
All roads for Rohl are currently pointing away from Hillsborough, or at least it appears that way from the words he's putting out there.
His position as the Owls' boss has seemingly been hanging in the balance since his players were paid their March wages late; so late, in fact, that the club were just a day away from being handed a three-window-long transfer ban.
From then to now, he has dropped multiple hints that suggested he won't be in his current role beyond this summer, despite having signed a contract extension last summer which is supposed to keep him in Sheffield until the end of the 2026/27 season.
Speaking on a recent podcast produced by German outlet Kicker, Rohl once again reiterated the point that Wednesday's owner is aware of what he wants to do next in his career. TalkSPORT reported on Thursday that he had decided to leave the club.
Rohl also strongly indicated that going back to the German first division, the Bundesliga, where he worked previously as an assistant for RB Leipzig, is a concrete possibility for him.
"Personally, I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday," said the 36-year-old. "I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’d like to work at the highest possible level with the best players in the near future. And the Bundesliga is, of course, a consideration. And yet, I also know that getting the final nod requires good work, the right people who believe in you, and timing.
"If all of that comes together, I might have the chance to return to the Bundesliga in the summer, or to return to the Bundesliga right away. But it could go in a completely different direction.
"My situation in Sheffield is unofficially relatively clear. There’s a clear agreement with the owner about how I envision my future. Unfortunately, I can’t go into detail about that right now."
The Owls have denied that there is any sort of understanding between the manager and the owner on his future.
"We can confirm there is no such agreement in place. Danny Rohl remains under contract with Sheffield Wednesday," said a spokesperson for the club to local publication The Star.
Among the clubs that Rohl has been linked to are RB Leipzig. In an interview with RBLive, a blog covering the German club, he said that the Bundesliga would be a "top choice" for him.
The way the manager was talking in the past tense - "I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday" - has got to indicate that he doesn't plan on taking charge of another game for the club.
He has brought such positivity to Hillsborough considering the miserable start that they made following their return to the Championship, but he is an ambitious coach and will want to challenge himself at the highest level.
For the other members of the club's hierarchy, all focus should be on lining up a replacement.
The quicker they get their ducks in a row, the quicker they can start to plan for next season, without the man that they once thought may take them back to the Premier League - sadly though, the strained relationship between head coach and owner appears to have reached its end credits.
