Sheffield Wednesday may have pulled off the comeback of the century on Thursday to pip Peterborough to the League 1 playoff final.
Darren Moore’s side entered their semi-final second leg down 4-0 and faced a mountain to climb to reach the final at Wembley.
Before this match, no club had ever turned around a four-goal deficit in the playoffs. But this team demonstrated the epitome of never say die.
Michael Smith’s early penalty boosted the hosts’ hope before goals from Lee Gregory and Reece James suggested maybe the comeback was on.
And fans at Hillsborough celebrated in jubilation when Liam Palmer redirected a loose ball home in the 98th minute and secured Sheffield Wednesday some elite football history for 4-4.
The match went into extra time, where Gregory’s own goal gave Peterborough the advantage.
That was until Callum Paterson stayed calm, cool and collected in the box minutes later and drilled home to level the game 5-5, sending it to penalties.
Sheffield Wednesday then scored each of their five penalties to reach the playoff final, where they will face either Barnsley or Bolton.
Fans rushed on to the pitch in celebration as the club inched closer to a spot in the Championship.
