Danny Röhl has officially left his role as head coach of Sheffield Wednesday, just under two weeks before the start of the new Championship campaign.
The German coach is now free to explore new opportunities, although he’s not believed to have a job lined up at this stage and is expected to take some time before deciding on his next move.
It’s understood that Röhl had already informed the club towards the back end of last season that he was considering stepping away. Now, following further discussions, an agreement has been reached for his departure with no compensation fee involved.
Röhl’s exit comes during a challenging period for the Owls, who continue to face financial difficulties under the ownership of Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri as the club has been hit with a three-window transfer embargo by the EFL due to overdue payments to staff, players, and HMRC.
The German coach took the reins at Hillsborough in October 2023, stepping in after Xisco Muñoz was dismissed following a nightmare start to the season as Wednesday had picked up just two points from their first ten league games.
The 36-year-old manager quickly set about steadying the ship, and his impact was clear. The team went on to win 15 of their remaining 36 matches, eventually climbing to 20th place and securing survival with 53 points, just three clear of the drop.
Last season, Röhl continued to bring stability and progress. The Owls finished a solid 12th in the Championship, ending the season with 58 points.
