Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy has enjoyed a dream start to the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, becoming one of the major talking points in high European circles as he tops the Bundesliga top scorer charts.

Like Die Schwaben, the 27-year-old was a marginal figure last term as the club needed to navigate the dreaded play-offs to keep hold of their top-flight status, with the frontman netting just 11 league goals.

Only seven matchdays into the new campaign, the former Rennes forward has already eclipsed his last season’s tally, bagging a jaw-dropping 13 goals to propel Stuttgart to second in the Bundesliga standings.

Guirassy’s sensational scoring exploits have come out of the blue, considering his perennial struggle in front of goal in Ligue 1, not to mention his dreadful stint at Koln between 2016 and 2019.

However, Sebastian Hoeness’ men have given the Guinea international a second chance in the Bundesliga, and he’s repaying their trust with a lightning form, thus far unmatched across Europe’s top-five leagues.

Rober Lewandowski’s record in jeopardy

When Bayern Munich signed Harry Kane to replace Lewandowski in the summer, many had thought the former Tottenham Hotspur talisman would steamroll to a top-scorer award this season.

Considering Kane’s off-the-charts prolificacy during his formidable Premier League career, he has quickly become part of conversations over Lewandowski’s outright record for the most goals scored in a single Bundesliga campaign.

For 49 years, Gerd Muller’s 40-goal tally had stood as the benchmark for the best individual campaign ever produced in Germany’s elite division before the Pole’s 41-goal haul in 2020/21 overtook the Bayern legend’s feat.

Kane has hit the ground running at the Allianz Stadium from the get-go, racking up eight goals in seven league outings for Thomas Tuchel’s side, including a hat-trick in a 7-0 rout of Bochum on matchday five.

In the same round, Guirassy notched up a brace in a 3-1 triumph over top-flight newcomers Darmstadt, hitting a ten-goal landmark to become the only player alongside Lewandowski to achieve that feat after the opening five games in Bundesliga history.

Despite drawing a blank against Koln the following weekend, the in-form striker made amends for a rare goalless appearance with a match-winning hat-trick against Wolfsburg on the stroke of the international break.

With 13 goals under his belt, Guirassy has already become Stuttgart’s record-time goalscorer in the first half of a season while there are still ten games to spare.

Regardless of his output in the upcoming match against Union Berlin, a side that has netted two goals less than the Guinean star alone, he’ll still remain the most prolific striker after the first eight Bundesliga rounds.

Though it’s impossible to expect Guirassy to continue his scoring spree at this rate, it stands to reason Lewandowski sweats over the possibility of his record being shattered come May 2024.

But for the sake of argument, if he were to maintain this insane form throughout the season, he’d finish 2023/24 with 63 goals, something not even prime Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had failed to do.

Guirassy boasts mind-blowing stats

Of his 13 goals this season, just one has come from the spot, testifying to his clinical finishing in front of goal.

More impressively, those strikes have come from 7.2 xG, with only Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface (8.1) and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (7.9) boasting more expected goals this term.

Guirassy has converted 42% of his shots, accounting for the best record of all players with at least 20 attempts in the top-five divisions this season.

Just one of his 12 goals from open play has been a header. Three have arrived from outside the box. Of the eight goals from inside the penalty area, two were delightful chips against Darmstadt and Mainz.

He has also scored twice with his weaker left foot, highlighting his phenomenal scoring sense.

Whether Guirassy can threaten Lewandowski’s record remains to be seen, but he has already done more than enough to help Stuttgart avoid another frustrating Bundesliga campaign.
