Sebastian Kehl has extended his contract as sporting director at Borussia Dortmund until 2027. The club have officially confirmed the news this afternoon.

The 44-year-old has come to an agreement after holding talks with managing director Lars Ricken for several weeks.

Kehl’s contract was set to expire in the summer, but the hierarchy will continue with three former Borussia Dortmund players with both Lars Ricken and head coach Nuri Sahin having represented Dortmund many times as well as Kehl.

The former captain succeeded long-serving sporting director Michael Zorc in 2022.

When Kehl signed his first contract, the deal was valid until June 2025, and it has now been extended by a further two years.

Prior to becoming sporting director, Kehl was head of the club’s professional player department for four years.

Since he has been in the role, Dortmund have finished in second and fifth place across two seasons in the Bundesliga and made it to the Champions League final last season in which they lost against Real Madrid.

“I’m extremely connected to Borussia Dortmund and I’m very happy to be able to continue working for this great club,” said Kehl.

“I feel the trust our management has placed in me as sporting director and would like to thank Lars in particular for the good and constructive discussions over the past few weeks. We have agreed on clear competencies and responsibilities and have great ambitions together.”
