Scottish League Cup: how Rangers’ new ownership is preparing for its first competition

In Scotland there are two dominant forces in football and they both play in Glasgow: Celtic and Rangers. The Gers, traditionally representing the protestant side of the city, won 117 official titles: 55 championships, 34 Scottish Cups and 28 Scottish League Cup. The latter is the national record. While Celtic, the christian side, has won more overall trophies. Obviously, there were a couple of years where Rangers didn’t play because the ownership filed for bankruptcy. Today, the Light Blues have a new staff with ambitions of their own. They want to win the League Cup again and are active on the transfer market in order to reach this goal.

All eyes on the Scottish League Cup

The first football competition of the year in Scotland will start in a month (on the 12th of July) and the Rangers are, as always, among the favourite teams. Whoever would like to bet on their final victory, or on any other result in the competition, can do so by taking advantage with Oddschecker of the free bets that Sky Bet makes available for new subscribers. Usually, the platform offers good deals also to existing customers.

The Scottish League Cup is open to members of the Scottish Premier Football League as well as the Highland and Lowland League champions. It has been contested since the 1946/1947 season and has a high historical value. It was the first ever League Cup to be formed.

The new Rangers’ ownership, led by Andrew Cavenagh and his 49ers Enterprises, would like to immediately win a tournament of this importance and greet in the best way possible its supporters. In Glasgow, football is serious and the Old Firm between Celtic and Rangers is one of the fiercest rivalries in the sport.

The investors

As the name suggests, 49ers Enterprises is the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers ownership. The 9ers are one of the best known American football teams in the world, thanks to their eighties’ performances. At the end of May they took over the Glasgow’s team by buying the majority of its controlling stakes (51%). The investors already control Leeds United and will continue with Patrick Stewart as CEO, while the healthcare tycoon Cavenagh has been appointed as chairman. He stated that the new owners’consortium will chart a new strategic vision for the club’s future, prioritising on-pitch performance and long-term financial sustainability.

The Rangers are actively pursuing talent

In order to stay competitive, the Rangers are actively looking for names on the transfer market. They are pursuing Cody Drameh, Hull City right-back, and the 18 years old Lennon Miller, who currently plays for Motherwell. New head coach Steven Martin, appointed from the new ownership group, would also like to add some veterans, not only interesting youngsters. The gaffer is looking to have a complete team at his disposal, not just a promising project. To achieve this objective, the team is looking at some Premier League’s stars who didn’t have their contract renewed.

Leicester City waived Conor Coady and club’s legend Jamie Vardy, and Rangers are eyeing their condition. Manchester United said goodbye to a few superstars like Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans or Victor Lindelof and these are other very good names. There is a lot of talent around but, as usual, the team must convince the potential additions of the strength of the new project. Ambition is great for new owners but they need to keep their foot on the ground and show solidity as well if they want to attract good contributors.

It would also be very important to keep around their own good players, such as Hamza Igamane, the 22 years old Moroccan striker. Rumors say a lot of teams in France and England are looking to nab him.
