According to L’Équipe, Olympique de Marseille striker Alexis Sánchez has attracted the attention of Saudi Arabia, with clubs in the country reportedly ready to spend ‘wild’ sums on the player. Marseille president Pablo Longoria wants the player to stay, after Sanchez enjoyed his best statistical season in the last five years.

Discussions between Sanchez’s agent, Fernando Felicevich, and OM officials, including Sporting Director Javier Ribalta, have reportedly taken place throughout the season regarding a potential contract extension. While progress seemed promising last month, the conclusion of OM’s season, which requires them to navigate playoffs to secure a UEFA Champions League spot, and the current circumstances have seemingly balanced the situation.

OM management consider Sanchez one of their best recruits, given the club’s uninspiring attacking choices in the past, including the loan of Arkadiusz Milik, the short-term acquisition of Luis Suarez and the arrival of Vitinha. Speaking of Sanchez, President Longoria acknowledged as such, declaring “99% of people agree that he is of international standard.” This praise has fuelled OM’s desire to extend Sanchez’s contract beyond its current terms.

“Saudi Arabia offers a lot of players the chance to earn a lot of money,” acknowledged Longoria, speaking to L’Équipe. “But here, Alexis has found an atmosphere where he feels loved and respected.”
