Sarina Wiegman was full of praise for her England side after their 6-1 win over Wales and subsequent progression to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2025.

“I thought it was a really good game,” the England boss said. “What we wanted to do is dictate the game, and that’s what we did. That is really good to see. And the most important thing is that we are through [to the quarter-finals], that we are out of this very hard group, and [are now] moving forward to Sweden.”

On how England came out of the group stage, she said: “I think we are in a good place. Everyone came out [of the game] fit. We did not have a good start against France, but that gave us the urgency to do things better as a team on the pitch, getting the connections better. The team responded really well. And now hopefully we can show that again against Sweden.”

With two big wins, the team has been building momentum which can be taken into the knockout stages. “We built momentum also from the France game. Everyone came together, everyone wanted to perform, and really wanted to be successful. In The Netherlands game, we created momentum, by playing really well and by playing to our strengths, you could see the togetherness of the team,” Wiegman said.

“Today was a totally different game. We knew that we would have the ball a lot and wanted to do well [on the ball], and we did that for most of the game. We are in a good place, we are happy, and that helps going into Sweden. But at the same time we know it’s going to be [a completely] different game than the one from tonight.”

As England have qualified as second in their group, their quarter-final match will be played a couple of days earlier than if they had qualified as first in their group. On this, Wiegman said: “It’s just what you have in front of you. That’s now three days and then we play again. We have been in this rhythm this tournament so far. It’s really nice that we don’t have to travel that far. And, I don’t have the facts, but from what I have seen, it wasn’t the most intense game, which of course helps too. We are in a good position, recover well, and then be ready on Thursday.”

England will play Sweden in their quarter-final on Thursday, at 21:00 CET [20:00 GMT] in Zürich.
