Beppe Riso, one of the most influential Italian agents, confirmed Serie A clubs cannot afford to sign Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali. Recently linked with a return to his homeland, Tonali has several admirers in Italy, including Inter and Juventus.
However, Riso insists Tonali’s price tag is prohibitive for all Serie A teams. In his recent interview with La Repubblica via Calciomercato, he admitted the ex-Milan midfielder’s future lies far from Italy.
“Sandro is one of the best midfielders in the world,” Riso stated. “He now has a value that Italian clubs will find difficult to afford. I envision a career for him away from Serie A.”
Tonali left Serie A in the summer of 2023 to join the Magpies in a mega-money deal. Indeed, Eddie Howe’s side poured around €70 million into Milan’s bank accounts to lure the deep-lying playmaker to St James’ Park.
Little did they know the 24-year-old had a long-term suspension waiting in the wings for breaching betting rules during his career in Serie A. Found guilty of breaking gambling regulations, Tonali had to spend nine months on the sidelines.
However, Sandro Tonali has quickly re-established himself as a permanent first-team fixture upon his return from a devastating ban. He has made 28 appearances for Newcastle this season, racking up three goals and two assists to earn interest from top Serie A clubs.
While most Serie A fans would love to see Tonali back, the midfielder’s price tag is too steep for all domestic clubs.
