Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has made a major decision on Andre Onana ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Onana was excluded from the United matchday squad that fell to a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal over the weekend, as the Red Devils kicked off their 2025/26 Premier League season.
The Cameroonian picked up an injury during pre-season training at Carrington. While he travelled with the team to the United States for their pre-season tour, he did not get a taste of the action, with Altay Bayindir primarily being deployed between the sticks.
Bayindir was given the nod to start against Arsenal but was at fault for the goal conceded, failing to get a strong hand to Declan Rice’s corner kick before it was headed in by Riccardo Calafiori.
Before the game, Amorim hinted that Onana was fit but was dropped due to selection reasons. Amorim told reporters that he felt the likes of Bayindir and Tom Heaton were more up to speed physically.
However, in his post-match press conference, the United head coach performed a U-turn, noting that he had not outrightly dropped Onana.
Speculation over the Cameroonian’s future at Old Trafford remains rife and a recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Inter Milan are considering a reunion before the transfer window closes.
As this goes on, it has emerged that Amorim is poised to start Onana in the upcoming match vs. Fulham.
talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook claims that United are currently planning for life with Onana and as a show of faith, he is expected to be named in the starting XI on Sunday.
According to Crook, “talkSPORT understands a new number one is not seen as a priority in what remains of the transfer window, and Andre Onana retains the confidence of manager Ruben Amorim.
“Sources close to United say that, based on data, the Cameroon international Onana fares kindly compared to most Premier League stoppers.”
“Onana, who missed all of pre-season injured, is expected to be back in goal for this weekend’s trip to Fulham.”
Fulham vs. United is scheduled to kick off at 16:30 BST.
