Rotherham United became the first club in the English Football League to suffer relegation this season following their 1-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle on Friday.

The Millers had to win at the New York Stadium to keep their survival hopes alive, but they fell to a disappointing defeat which ended their two-year stay in the Championship.

Plymouth broke the deadlock through a 32nd-minute strike from Bali Mumba. The hosts tried to make a comeback in the second half but failed to convert their chances.

Rotherham have endured a miserable season, losing 26 of their 41 league matches. They failed to register a single victory on the road.

Matt Taylor, who kept them in the second tier last term, was sacked in November following a dismal start to the new campaign.

Leam Richardson replaced him in the dugout but he has failed to revive the club’s fortunes. The Millers have won just two of their 21 league games under Richardson.

He will now hope to secure an immediate return to the Championship next season.
