Thomas Frank confirmed that Cristian Romero would have been his captain even if Heung-Min Son had stayed at the club.

Son had previously been captain in the last two seasons but announced he was leaving the club at the beginning of August when Spurs were on tour in Korea.

When asked if he would have picked Romero if Son was still at the club Frank said: “The captain before was Son, so just as a small detail, I would have picked Cuti no matter what.

“I’ve looked at Romero from the outside, so what you say there I haven’t noticed as much.  I know he’s a big and good player, but a very good player.

“I’ve chosen him as a captain because I think his leadership quality is when he steps on the pitch. There’s a big respect around him from the players, off the pitch as well. He also sets the standards.”

Even though the Dane picked Romero as captain, he still feels as though the Argentine has a lot to learn.

“When I look back at myself at 27 years old, of course I thought I could do everything, but I also found out that as a leader I’m 1,000 per cent better now,” he said.

“So he also needs to learn and become better and better, and I’ll do my best to guide him.”

The defender has been linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer but Frank says that he is delighted to have him.

“The staff members have said to me that they have never seen him train that well so he’s in a very good place,” he explained.

“I see a player that I want to lead the team and push the team. I think when I name a captain, it’s because I think he’s the best, no matter what can help the team. Now and also in the future.

“It’s not really linked with the contract situation. Of course, he’s a very good player, so I’d love him to stay for longer.”

Spurs fans have protested against Daniel Levy and the club’s board because of what they describe as a lack of investment and increased ticket prices before games against Manchester United and Southampton in April last year, but Frank believes that Levy is working hard with the club’s best interests in mind.

He said: “We need the support of the fans, of course. The team needs the support of the fans, which, as far as I have seen, heard and experienced in the past  has been very good.

“They always support and back the team. So that we need massively tomorrow. It’s a new season, it’s a new beginning. I’m pretty sure the game tomorrow will not be straightforward.

“What I see internally, I just see Daniel Levy, Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham working night and day to do everything they can to strengthen the squad.”
