Manchester City are on course to tie down the world’s best footballer to a new long-term contract following year-long negotiations, according to a new report.

Much of the ongoing conversation around the Premier League giants is currently centred around potential additions into Pep Guardiola’s playing squad, with somewhat of a rebuild underway during the off-season.

With four new signings brought into the club at the midway stage of the last season at a cost of around £175 million, a minimum of a further four additions are also expected during the summer, before taking into account exits and supplementary signings.

Simultaneously, it seems as though Manchester City officials are also being proactive when it comes to securing the futures of their existing stars, following on from the staggering 10-year deal finalised with Erling Haaland earlier in the year.

The latest developments concern the club’s first-ever Ballon d’Or winner in Rodri, who has firmly recovered from a serious knee injury and returned to competitive action for Pep Guardiola alongside his Manchester City teammates ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

According to the latest information of The Mirror’s Simon Mullock, City are now ready to hand Rodri a new contract at the Etihad Stadium following year-long negotiations between both parties – delayed by the Spaniard’s complicated injury.

The report explains that the new agreement for Rodri will underline his importance to the club and his status as the world’s top player following his Ballon d’Or triumph ahead of the likes of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham.

With two years left on his existing deal, the new contract is reportedly set to keep the Spaniard at Manchester City until the summer of 2029 and take his salary beyond the £300,000-a-week barrier – making him the club’s second-highest earner after Erling Haaland.

Rodri most recently addressed his club future during one of the many interviews that followed his historic achievement at the Ballon d’Or last Autumn, as he told Spanish media of the possibility of ending his career and retiring with Manchester City one day.

“It could be a possibility to end at Manchester City. I love football in England, the club is amazing, not only on a sporting level, but also structurally,” the 28-year-old told Cadena SER in November.

“I’m very comfortable and feel very loved,” he added, before going on to stress his love for his home country and the top-flight he once starred in prior to his career moving over to Manchester in 2019.

“But Spain is my country. I keep an eye on La Liga, the level of teams is growing… I’ve been lucky to play in both, to have the best coaches and in that sense I’m very happy.”

The latest developments concerning Rodri and the possibility of contractually extending his stay at Manchester City comes as further reports from Spain speculate over growing interest from Real Madrid in his services further down the line.
