Ever since Rodri went down with an ACL injury against Arsenal in September, Manchester City has had a massive hole in their midfield. Pep Guardiola has struggled to replace their midfield general across this season. That has seemingly changed with Nico’s arrival from FC Porto on deadline day. His performance against Newcastle showed that he is fully capable of filling Rodri’s shoes. With Nico in midfield, there is no need for Manchester City to rush Rodri back until he is fully fit. City’s midfield general is remaining upbeat in his recovery from the injury he sustained in September. But Manchester City should continue to take a cautious approach with his return.
In an interview published on mancity.com Rodri explained that he is feeling positive as he recovers from the ACL injury he sustained in September. Speaking about his recovery he said: “I’m feeling very good. In my head, everything is fine. I don’t feel unstable in the knee. I need to get the strength in the quads and everything. That’s the most important thing. One thing is what you think and another is what the body does, so you have to make sure that they connect again. I’m feeling good. In this kind of moment, I try to be positive.”
Rodri is slowly working his way back to full fitness. But with Nico appearing to have settled into Pep Guardiola’s squad there absolutely no need to rush Rodri back from his injury. There needs to be a patient and cautious approach taken with Rodri’s return. There is nothing to gain from rushing him back and with Nico adding what City’s midfield lacked all season it seems that is how Rodri’s recovery will now play out.
