Rob Edwards is under growing pressure at Kenilworth Road.

Luton Town have not lived up to expectations in the Championship this season, and pressure has been growing on Rob Edwards to turn things around.

The Hatters went into the 2024/25 campaign with optimism, anticipating that they could mount a promotion push in the second tier and compete for an immediate return to the Premier League after finishing 18th in the top flight last season.

However, Rob Edwards' side currently find themselves languishing in 19th place, just three points clear of the relegation zone ahead of vitally important back-to-back home fixtures against Swansea City and Stoke City.

They have lost three of their last four games, and conceded 12 goals in the process, with their most recent win coming against fellow strugglers Hull City last month.

There has been growing discontent among Luton supporters as their underwhelming performances have continued, so pressure has been growing on the manager to improve results.

This is the most pressure that Edwards has been under at Luton since he was appointed by the club in November 2022.

The 41-year-old led the Hatters to promotion from the Championship via the play-offs in his first season at the helm, but that all seems like a distant memory at present with the way that things are going.

Edwards admitted that the situation around his future was out of his hands after he watched his team lose 5-1 to Middlesbrough a few weeks ago, although he explained that he had the backing of chief executive Gary Sweet in the aftermath of the game.

"When people are asking about your job, there are certain elements that are out of my control," Edwards said, as per the BBC.

"Time passes, we were able to talk about a few things, it's settled and I'm able to get real focus again and get back to work.

"It's been tough for quite a long time now. There are a lot of challenges on and off the pitch and I'm working on that.

"Gary and I had a lot of discussions, really positive and healthy - he's been extremely supportive, as has the board."

Since then, Luton have suffered defeats against Leeds United and Norwich City, meaning that speculation over his future has not gone away.

Edwards will hope that he can recover from the situation that he currently finds himself in, and there are a few reasons why he could have a belief that he will be able to do so.

He signed a new four-year deal in the summer, meaning that if Luton were to sack him, he would be entitled to a £1.5 million payoff, as per journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon.

The fact that he has only recently signed a new deal, and that the club would need to pay a hefty compensation package if they were to relieve him of his duties, likely gives him more leeway than others may have after producing the same results.

There is also an argument that Luton's results have been worse than their performances have deserved.

The Hatters have conceded the third-most goals per match, despite only having conceded the 13th-highest amount of xG, which suggests Edwards is slightly unfortunate that his side has let in so many goals.

Meanwhile, Luton have missed the fifth-most big chances, as well as having had the sixth-highest number of touches in the opposition box, implying that they could have scored more than the 20 goals they have managed from their 18 league games so far.
