Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski is aiming to be fit for the second Serie A match of the season against Lecce.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Pole will not recover from his thigh injury in time for the season opener but should be back soon after.

30-year-old former Napoli midfielder Zielinski has suffered a bit of a setback in preseason.

Zielinski had picked up a thigh strain in the aftermath of Inter’s friendly match against Pisa.

The injury is hardly an overly serious one. The Polish international will only be out for a few weeks.

But prior to his injury Zielinski had been gaining momentum in preseason.

The 30-year-old has been part of Inter’s training camp nearly right from the start.

Just as important as gaining physical condition for Zielinski has been getting up to speed tactically in his new team.

Zielinski has arrived at Inter after eight years at Napoli. And now he is learning to play in Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2- system.

Prior to his injury, Zielinski had even looked to be a candidate to start in Inter’s season opener.

The Nerazzurri travel to Genoa in one week’s time. They begin their Serie A title defense.

Considering that Zielinski has been one of the players who has been training for weeks, reports indicated that Nerazzurri coach Inzaghi was ready to hand him a big opportunity right away at the Marassi.

The muscle injury has derailed that hope for Zielinski.

There is certainly no chance of the 30-year-old rushing back for the match against Genoa.

But a return is not far away for Zielinski.

The Corriere report that the Pole should have plenty of time to return for the match against Lecce the following weekend.
