In what came as a commendable signal of intent by INEOS chiefs last week, Manchester United submitted a bid for Leny Yoro knowing that the defender was holding out on Real Madrid meeting Lille’s valuation.

The sought-after starlet has attracted interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs this summer, as even Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain were mulling over offers for Yoro before his preference for a summer move became apparent.

Earlier in the window, he made it clear to his club that out of all his potential suitors, a move to the Santiago Bernabeu was the one his heart desired. You can’t really blame him, either, given that Madrid are on the back of clinching an unprecedented 15th European title.

Knowing his worth and that the 18-year-old is only just at the start of his career, Lille set their valuation in the region of £50 million. However, Madrid have been reluctant to meet such demands given that Yoro will be available for free next June when his contract expires.

United, meanwhile, are willing to pay top price for the talent this year to save themselves the hassle of a battle for his signature in 2025. They submitted a bid of around €50m (£42m) to test the Ligue 1 outfit’s resolve, which was swiftly accepted.

They now find themselves awaiting a decision from the centre-half, who hopes to see Madrid either match the Reds’ proposal or reach an agreement with Lille. Reports have suggested he’d be open to seeing out the remaining year of his deal to then complete his dream transfer in 12 months.

What one transfer reporter is hearing about Yoro

Spanish expert Matteo Moretto shared his understanding of the situation in his exclusive Daily Briefing column, saying: “Real Madrid started concrete talks with Lille for Yoro last week, but currently, they are not close to agreeing a price.

“As we have said on many occasions, knowing that Yoro is out of contract next summer, Real Madrid are really keen not to throw more money than necessary at this deal.

“In addition, they know he continues to prioritise Real Madrid. Manchester United offered a very high amount, which, with bonuses, was in excess of €50m. Lille are pressuring Yoro to go to Manchester United.

“It all comes down to Yoro really – if he digs his heels in and continues to hold out for Real Madrid, or if he changes his mind and accepts an offer from United, which is what Lille want him to do.

“Right now, United are speaking with Lille, too, rather than with Yoro’s agent. Last week, I can say that Real Madrid were very relaxed about it, knowing they are Yoro’s priority – we’ll see what happens.”
