Liverpool’s transfer activity is showing no signs of slowing down, with reports suggesting a sensational swoop for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz is on the verge of completion. According to Give Me Sport, the 22-year-old has rejected interest from Bayern Munich to join the reigning Premier League champions, and the deal could be wrapped up this week.
Fabrizio Romano’s update – “Here we go soon” in spirit, if not in words – has stirred real excitement among Reds supporters, as Arne Slot wastes no time reshaping a title-winning squad. Fresh from delivering Liverpool’s 20th league title, Slot now appears set to add one of Europe’s most promising playmakers to his midfield.
While the ink isn’t yet dry on the contract, attention has already turned to what number Wirtz will wear at Anfield. The German international has donned the iconic number 10 shirt for Leverkusen, but with Alexis Mac Allister firmly settled into that role for Liverpool, Wirtz will need an alternative.
The most likely outcome? A return to his roots. As Give Me Sport notes, “Wirtz is expected to revert to his old squad number at Leverkusen,” which was 27. This number is currently unoccupied at Liverpool, making it a strong candidate.

Though not a traditionally high-profile number, the 27 shirt carries unique sentimental value for fans. Divock Origi wore it during his unforgettable Liverpool career, scoring crucial goals including in the Champions League final of 2019. The Belgian remains the most successful number 27 in Anfield history.
Other names to have worn the shirt include Darwin Nunez – who had an underwhelming stint with it – as well as Gregory Vignal and Philipp Degen. However, as Give Me Sport observes, “only seven players have ever worn the 27 at Anfield,” underlining the rarity and potential for Wirtz to redefine its legacy.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool reign couldn’t have begun more emphatically. A Premier League title in his first season has already endeared him to the Anfield faithful. Yet, it’s clear he’s not resting on those laurels.
Jeremie Frimpong’s arrival looks imminent, and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is also heavily linked. Both deals, alongside Wirtz’s expected signing, suggest a squad evolving quickly, with high technical ability and youth at its core.
Slot’s aggressive early summer approach mirrors the urgency of top-tier management. As other contenders like Arsenal and Manchester City prepare to respond, Liverpool’s head start in the market could prove decisive.
Florian Wirtz has been nothing short of exceptional in the Bundesliga. At just 22, he has consistently delivered for Leverkusen with creative flair, vision and goals. His technical intelligence and ability to operate between the lines make him an ideal fit for the Premier League’s pace and intensity.
Many Liverpool supporters are already salivating at the idea of a midfield trio including Wirtz, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai. With Wirtz’s arrival, the club sends a strong signal: they intend not just to defend the title, but to dominate.
This is exactly the sort of transfer that gets Liverpool fans dreaming. Florian Wirtz isn’t just a “good signing” – he’s a generational talent. The fact that he reportedly turned down Bayern Munich to join Liverpool is massive. It speaks volumes about the pull of Anfield right now and the faith players have in Arne Slot’s project.
From a fan’s perspective, seeing Wirtz potentially wear the number 27 shirt – last made famous by Divock Origi – feels like a poetic passing of the torch. Origi brought magic in clutch moments, and Wirtz now has the chance to redefine that number as a symbol of week-in, week-out brilliance.
Slot deserves immense credit. Winning the league was extraordinary, but he’s clearly planning for long-term domination. Wirtz, Frimpong and potentially Kerkez are all young, elite-level players with high ceilings.
And there’s also something special about beating Bayern Munich to a German player. It feels like a power shift. Liverpool are no longer just competing with Europe’s best – they are becoming the preferred destination.
We say: bring on the shirt unveiling, and let Wirtz light up the Premier League.
