Paris Saint-Germain loanee Marco Asensio made his Aston Villa debut in their 2-1 FA Cup win over Tottenham last weekend at Villa Park. The former Real Madrid star also shared the key factor that convinced him to join the English club.
Asensio will stay with the Premier League club until the end of the 2024-25 season, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that Aston Villa will cover his full salary until June. However, there is no purchase option included in the deal.
Meanwhile, Duncan Castles provided further insight into Asensio’s move, revealing that Villa specifically declined the chance to include a buy option.
According to Castles, PSG had requested a loan fee, but Villa hesitated due to their concerns over staying within Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limits.

Asensio spoke with The Mirror and revealed the initial conversations with Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and what was the selling point the club made that convinced him to join them until the end of the season.
“I spoke with Unai so many times, he transmitted lots of things to me – like how the coaching staff work, how the boys are, what Villa Park is like,” Asensio told the outlet. “He told me the faith he had in the club and what he’s creating.
“I knew people from his coaching staff. Everywhere they have been, they have had success. Throughout football they are recognised for developing and improving players. And the project that the club has is incredible. That’s one of the things that attracted me.”
Moreover, Asensio shared that he could’ve joined the Premier League side after leaving Real Madrid and joining PSG.
“I could have come here one year ago,” Asensio said. “It’s been in my mind since then because I know it’s a winning team, and the plan is to aim high and win titles. It was an opportunity. I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League. So, why not?”
