Spurs Eye Joao Palhinha as Loan Talks Begin with Bayern

Palhinha on Spurs’ Radar

Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Bayern Munich over a potential loan move for Portuguese midfielder Joao Palhinha, according to The Athletic. The north London club are keen on bolstering their midfield and prefer a loan deal over a permanent transfer at this stage.

Palhinha, 30, only joined Bayern last summer in a €51million move from Fulham but has struggled to secure regular minutes in the Bundesliga. He made 25 appearances across all competitions, starting just 10 matches under Vincent Kompany, who has consistently preferred other midfielders such as Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Konrad Laimer.

With Bayern further strengthening their midfield by signing 20-year-old Tom Bischof from Hoffenheim, Palhinha has slipped further down the pecking order, making a move away all the more likely.

Experience and Premier League Pedigree

For Spurs, Palhinha represents an experienced and proven option in the heart of midfield. His performances for Fulham between 2022 and 2024 were outstanding — making 79 appearances and winning the club’s Player of the Season award in his debut campaign.

“Palhinha had become a key figure at Fulham following his move from Sporting CP in 2022,” noted The Athletic, highlighting just how quickly he adapted to Premier League football. His ball-winning abilities and physical presence would add depth and steel to a Spurs midfield already transitioning under new boss Thomas Frank.

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Taking Shape

Since replacing Ange Postecoglou, Frank has overseen a proactive summer at Hotspur Way. Mohammed Kudus arrived from West Ham in a £55million move, while young defenders Luka Vuskovic and Kota Takai have also been added to the squad. Mathys Tel, who impressed on loan last season, has been signed permanently from Bayern for up to €45million.

The addition of Palhinha would mark the club’s fourth incoming signing — and perhaps their most experienced yet. Spurs previously missed out on Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, who opted to sign a new contract with Forest despite undergoing a medical in north London.

Loan Deal Could Suit Both Clubs

With Spurs reportedly preferring a temporary move, and Bayern open to trimming their midfield options, a loan could be mutually beneficial. It would give Palhinha a fresh start and valuable minutes in a competitive league he knows well, while giving Frank a seasoned enforcer in midfield.

As The Athletic reported: “Palhinha was available this summer, with Spurs favouring a loan over a permanent deal.” Given his Premier League pedigree and the need for midfield depth, this could prove to be a shrewd piece of business for Tottenham.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Spurs fan perspective, this move feels like clever business rather than a splashy headline. Joao Palhinha is not a marquee name, but he’s exactly the kind of midfielder Tottenham have been missing. Strong in the tackle, tactically disciplined, and with Premier League experience — he ticks a lot of boxes.

There’s an increasing sense that under Thomas Frank, Spurs are prioritising balance and depth. Palhinha’s potential arrival, especially on a loan basis, reflects that philosophy. It also suggests the club have learned from previous summers when they spent big on players who didn’t necessarily fit the system.

The fact that he struggled at Bayern isn’t overly concerning — their midfield is stacked, and Kompany had clear favourites. At Fulham, Palhinha was immense: consistent, combative and a natural leader. His ability to break up play and protect the back four could prove vital, especially in games where Spurs are under pressure.

And crucially, a loan reduces risk. If it works out, there’s always the option to negotiate a permanent deal. If not, the club can reassess without financial strain. In an era of inflated fees and FFP pressures, it’s a move that makes sense on all fronts.

Palhinha may not be the flashiest name linked with Spurs this summer, but in terms of what he brings to the squad — it could be one of the most important.
