Tottenham Hotspur’s summer shake-up has taken a seismic turn with the departure of club captain and fan favourite Heung-min Son. According to AS, the South Korean international—who has been at Spurs since 2015—leaves behind not only an attacking void but also significant salary room. Son’s €11 million annual wages are now off the books, creating ideal conditions for Daniel Levy to pursue long-term target Rodrygo Goes from Real Madrid.
At 33, Son’s exit signals a changing of the guard in North London. And Spurs’ sights are firmly set on the Brazilian winger, whose contract at Madrid runs until 2028. AS notes that Tottenham have “asked Real Madrid for permission to speak with him,” a clear sign of intent.

Rodrygo, 24, has seen his status at Madrid fluctuate. His playing time during the Club World Cup under Xabi Alonso was reduced, and the arrivals of Franco Mastantuono and Gonzalo have further complicated his role. Despite being highly rated, Rodrygo has often played second fiddle to Vinicius Jr., especially on the left wing—his preferred position.
AS quotes that “Rodrygo’s natural habitat…was always blocked by Vinicius.” At Spurs, he would have the chance to start regularly in his favoured role, and the appeal of Premier League football and Champions League involvement under new American investment could prove tempting.
Tottenham are currently focused on signing João Palhinha from Bayern Munich, per AS, “the exclusive request of new coach Thomas Frank.” Only after completing this midfield deal will Levy consider “the finishing touches on Rodrygo.” Importantly, Spurs are “not going crazy” in the market, sticking to a strategic plan.
However, Spurs’ pursuit could be derailed by Liverpool. AS reveals that “Rodrygo awaits Liverpool,” though the Reds pulled back after focusing on Alexander Isak. With Newcastle reportedly rejecting a €140 million bid, Liverpool’s attention may shift again. The article warns, “The final word has not been said.”
From a Tottenham supporter’s perspective, Son’s departure is bittersweet. He’s been a legend at the club, but football doesn’t stand still. Fans will welcome the ambition of targeting Rodrygo—a player with Champions League pedigree and flair.
Rodrygo would instantly bring pace, creativity, and end product to the Spurs’ attack. Crucially, his natural position on the left aligns perfectly with the space vacated by Son. And under Thomas Frank, a coach known for developing players, Rodrygo could thrive.
However, there’s natural scepticism. Spurs have often been linked with high-profile players only for deals to fall through. The Liverpool threat is real, and Levy must act decisively. While fans understand the club’s focus on securing Palhinha first, many will be hoping it doesn’t delay or scupper a potential Rodrygo move.
