Liverpool Eyeing Long-Term Move for Marc Guehi – But Is It the Right Time?

Guehi Interest Part of Wider Defensive Planning

Liverpool’s ongoing defensive reshuffle continues to gather pace, with the club now reportedly lining up Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi as a long-term option. In an exclusive by Graeme Bailey for Rousing The Kop, it’s claimed that Liverpool are “exploring the idea” of bringing Guehi to Anfield – though not imminently. The 24-year-old is being considered as a free agent signing in the summer of 2026, rather than an immediate replacement.

This speculation arises in the wake of Jarell Quansah’s proposed move to Bayer Leverkusen. Although that deal is not yet finalised, the expectation is that Quansah will depart in search of regular minutes. As Bailey reports, “the transfer is understood to be not as advanced as has been reported elsewhere,” yet it’s clearly gathering momentum.

Should Quansah go, the need for defensive depth will be obvious – but it appears Guehi doesn’t want to play third fiddle at this point in his career. “The 24-year-old is understood to be reluctant to arrive at Anfield as a third choice option as things stand,” Bailey notes.

Alternatives to Guehi Under Consideration

Importantly, Liverpool’s interest in Guehi – while genuine – does not mean other targets are off the table. According to Bailey, “Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera and Nathan Zeze of Nantes are both being watched, while the Reds are also long-term admirers of Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande.”

These names show the club is weighing multiple options for succession planning in defence. Guehi, as a player entering the final year of his Crystal Palace contract, could present excellent value – whether now or next summer. Palace rejected a £70m bid for him just five months ago, but are now reportedly open to offers around £45m.

What Guehi Brings to the Table

There’s little doubt over Guehi’s quality. Described as “exceptional” at Euro 2024, the former Chelsea academy talent has matured into one of the most composed defenders in the Premier League. At 24, he blends experience with potential – a combination that would appeal to any elite club.

Still, Liverpool’s cautious stance is understandable. Guehi wants regular starts, and with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez still at the club, opportunities could be limited without a reshuffle.

Transfer Strategy Reflects Slot’s Vision

Arne Slot’s approach to squad building is starting to take shape. Though he was happy to retain Quansah, the player’s desire for first-team football is likely to win out. If Guehi – or another high-calibre defender – is brought in, it’ll be with the long-term stability of Liverpool’s backline in mind.

Whether it’s Guehi, Diomande, or someone else, one thing is clear: Liverpool are preparing for life beyond Van Dijk, and this summer could set the tone for a new defensive era.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, the Guehi situation is fascinating. On paper, he ticks every box – Premier League proven, still young, international pedigree, and with leadership qualities. For £45m, you’re potentially getting a future defensive leader, especially if Van Dijk is winding down in a couple of years.

However, fans will rightly question whether Guehi would be content waiting for minutes. We’ve seen quality players lose momentum when they’re not given consistent roles.

Jarell Quansah leaving would sting too. The academy graduate showed signs last season that he could be part of the club’s future. If the club can’t offer him the pathway, then a move to Leverkusen may be perfect for him, but it should spark debate about how we manage young talents.

As for other options like Diomande or Mosquera – they’re exciting, but carry more risk given they’re not Premier League-tested. Guehi is a known quantity and could step into the squad immediately if needed.

Overall, Liverpool fans should be encouraged that the recruitment team is thinking long-term. Let’s just hope whoever comes in isn’t blocked by the same rotation trap that’s affected others. Depth is great – but clarity in roles is even better.
