Enzo Maresca is said to be “crazy” about Portugal international Renato Veiga according to reports coming out of Italy.

The Blues took everyone by surprise when they agreed a deal to sign Veiga for €14m from Swiss side FC Basel last summer.

The 21-year-old was signed primarily as back-up at left back for Marc Cucurella, but Chelsea were said to be attracted by his versatility given he can also play at centre back and in midfield.

Maresca “crazy” about Veiga

Veiga impressed in his appearances over the first half of the season ,and although he only started one Premier League game, he started all six Conference League games, scoring twice.

His performances earned him a call-up to the national team and he’s now a full Portugal international with three caps.

It therefore came as a surprise when Veiga was allowed to join Juventus on loan in January despite only signing for the Blues last summer.

Veiga was a standout performer in the 1-0 win against Inter Milan over the weekend, and has settled well into life in Italy.

He’s set to return to Chelsea in time for the Club World cup, although what the club’s long term plans for Veiga are aren’t entirely clear.

However, Italian outlet Tutto Sport have reported that Maresca is “crazy” about Veiga and was convinced to let him go because the deal was a simple dry loan.

The report adds that Chelsea believe in Veiga and the only way Juventus could sign him is if he insists on staying in Turin beyond his loan spell.

It’s great that Veiga is playing regular football in a top five league which will be vital for his development and he will no doubt come back to Chelsea a better player.
