AC Milan finally got the ball rolling in their 2024-25 Champions League campaign with a 3-1 win over Club Brugge last night at San Siro.

The scoreline only tells part of the story as Milan led through Christian Pulisic’s goal directly from a corner, went a man up when Raphael Onyedika saw red but then conceded an equaliser early in the second half.

In the end it was Tijjani Reijnders – with the help of the two substitutes Noah Okafor and Samuel Chukwueze – who scored a brace to win the game and spare the Rossoneri from what would have been a negative result. Below are the best stats from the game.

The overview

The key numbers from the game are always likely to be skewed slightly when a team plays with 10 men for over the game, and therefore it is no surprise to see that Milan dominated possession with 62% of the ball.

Paulo Fonseca’s side also had more Expected Goals, big chances and total shots which implies a dominance that simply wasn’t there until the game was put to bed.

Team game

After four defeats in a row, the game last night meant that Milan have won in a European competition for the first time since 14 March 2024, which was a 3-1 victory against Slavia Praha in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

In addition to that, Milan scored three goals from open play to win a Champions League game for the first time since 2 November 2022. In that particular instance it was a 4-0 home win against against Red Bull Salzburg in the UCL group stages.

Individual acclaim

With his brace, Reijnders becomes the third Dutch player to have scored more than one goal for Milan in a Champions League game after Marco van Basten (four goals against Göteborg in November 1992) and Clarence Seedorf (brace against Shakhtar Donetsk in October 2007).

Christian Pulisic is the Serie A player with the highest number of goal involvements this calendar year in all competitions with 24, split into 15 goals and nine assists.

At the age of 16 years and 226 days, Francesco Camarda became the youngest player for Milan to make a Champions League appearance, as well as the youngest Italian player in the whole competition – breaking the record held by Moise Kean with Juventus (16 years and 268 days).
