Chelsea captain Reece James has vowed out to "come out on top" after suffering another devastating injury setback.

The 24-year-old has played just 654 minutes of football since being handed the captain's armband by Mauricio Pochettino in August 2023 - the equivalent of just over seven full matches.

James recently returned to Chelsea's side, starting against Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester United, but saw his reintegration into the team carefully managed by new head coach Enzo Maresca, dropping to the bench for the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Maresca revealed on Thursday that James had picked up another hamstring injury in training, with a report from the Telegraph confirming that a scan will take place next week once swelling around the concerned area goes down.

The club had hoped to learn the extent of James' injury this weekend but must now wait before finding out how long the academy graduate will be out for.

In the meantime, James has taken to social media to address his latest issue, posting on Instagram: "This message is to the people that understand and have respect for what I'm going through... I appreciate you so much, your support and kind words go further than you could ever imagine.

"And just to touch on me... I'm doing OK, been better and also been worse. Another challenge ahead accepted. Eventually I'll come out on top. Against all odds.

"Lastly, I'd like to touch on the festive period coming, these times are tough for everyone! I wish you all a happy and peaceful festive season."

Chelsea are at least well stocked in the full-back department having recruited Malo Gusto from Lyon in January 2023. The 21-year-old has become a regular in the side, showing versatility to play on both flanks when required, and is set to continue operating on the right in James' absence.
