Post-match reaction following the draw away Union Berlin

Disappointment was written across the faces of the SV Werder Bremen players when the final whistle sounded in the German capital. The Green-Whites had been in control for the majority of proceedings away to 1. FC Union Berlin, but ultimately had to settle for a 2-2 draw. WERDER.DE have summed up all the post-match reaction.

Head coach Ole Werner: “Without beating around the bush, only drawing after being 2-0 feels like two points dropped. We played really well for 30 minutes but then Union changed the course of the match, making things rather more hectic. We just weren’t able to capitalise on the spaces that opened up for us based on the score line. On the whole, we defended well in and around the box but just failed to do so at two decisive moments. When all is said and done, the result appears a fair one.”

Goalscorer Jens Stage: “Everyone wanted to get the three points today – that was the aim of the team. The first-half performance was really good but after conceding shortly before the break, we knew the second period would pose a real battle. Union did really well and scored a great goal but it is a tough one to take.”

Captain Marco Friedl: “We have missed another opportunity to win a game and climb the table. We should have won here after taking the lead. We were really good in possession early on and Union didn’t know what to do. We should have killed the game off with a third goal but instead went into the break having conceded. We generally defended really well, so I can fully understand anyone who is frustrated after today’s game. I am personally really disappointed in ourselves.”

Managing director for sport Clemens Fritz: “We played really well for 35 minutes, found lots of space, controlled the game and played with intensity and aggression. Conceding from their first chance was disappointing. We then struggled more to find space in the second half and Union grew into the game. It was a solid performance overall, however it feels like we lost today.”
