Real Madrid lost Karim Benzema in the summer of last year but opted not to sign a top-level replacement for the French superstar.

Instead, the only striker who came through the doors at Valdebebas was Joselu, who arrived on a season-long loan deal from RCD Espanyol.

The 34-year-old’s loan deal cost €500,000 and included a permanent purchase option for a fee worth €1.5 million.

Now, journalist Patrick Berger reports that Real Madrid intend to retain Joselu for another season at the club by triggering the buy option in the deal with Espanyol.

Joselu has enjoyed a brilliant season back at Real Madrid, and has chipped in with crucial goals throughout the campaign, none more so than his brace in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich.

The veteran Spaniard has scored 17 goals in all competitions while registering three assists as well.

Everyone at Real Madrid is very happy with how the striker has done this season and are keen on keeping him around for next season.

There has been interest in Joselu from Manchester United as well as clubs from Saudi Arabia.

But it appears that Joselu will continue at Real Madrid for one more year, although with Kylian Mbappe and Endrick set to arrive, competition for places will be extremely high.
