With only four games left to be played in the season, Real Madrid are hoping to take back control of the La Liga title race.

The Merengues are currently four points behind leaders Barcelona and with the Clasico coming up later this weekend, it could end up having major repercussions on the title race – making it a must-win game for Carlo Ancelotti & co.

Naturally, Real Madrid will look to their big superstars, including summer signing Kylian Mbappe, to step up and deliver in what could be a season-defining match for the current champions.

Mbappe eyes historic record

Apart from the team objectives, Mbappe will have a personal target on his mind when he takes the pitch against Barcelona on Sunday at Montjuic.

After all, the Frenchman is on the brink of making history at Real Madrid. With 36 goals in his first season at the club, the French striker is just one goal away from equaling Ivan Zamorano’s record of 37 goals in a debut season, set in 1992/93.

Mbappe’s brace against Celta Vigo this past weekend brought him within striking distance of the legendary Chilean, and he now has four matches left to surpass that tally – starting with El Clasico at Montjuic.

Mbappe has scored his 36 goals in 52 appearances, while Zamorano hit 37 in 45 games. The 26-year-old megastar has already surpassed the 33 goals scored by Cristiano Ronaldo in his debut season (in 35 matches).

The former PSG attacker has also gone past other legendary figures like Ruud van Nistelrooy (33 goals in 47 matches), Ronaldo Nazario (30 goals in 44 matches), and Hugo Sanchez (29 goals in 49 matches).

Pichichi Trophy also in sight

Beyond chasing club history, Mbappe is also hot on the heels of Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski in the race for the Pichichi Trophy.

The Polish veteran leads the goalscoring charts in La Liga with 25 strikes, just one ahead of the Real Madrid ace, whose consistency has intensified as the season nears its climax.

Historically, Barcelona have been a favorable opponent for Mbappe. He has scored eight goals in seven matches against the Catalans, including strikes in each of the last two Clasicos.

With both personal and team objectives on the line, Mbappe must step up for Real Madrid this coming Sunday.
